The causes behind these seizures are unknown in most of the epileptic cases but sometimes they can be identified. The secondary epilepsy is said to have a known cause. Some major causes behind this type of epilepsy can be:

  • Damage of brain caused at the childbirth
  • Severe Head Injury
  • Brain Tumors
  • Any genetic disorder
  • Brain Stroke that restricts the oxygen

Usually, the symptoms of seizures depend on where the disturbance in the brain first starts and how far it spreads. Some temporary symptoms of epilepsy include disturbance in vision, loss of consciousness, disturbance in taste, hearing capabilities, mood swings or any cognitive disorder.
Epileptic patients also have issues such as depression, anxiety and other problems such as fractures or seizure-related injuries.

CBD is a potent cannabinoid which is found in abundance in the Hemp Plant. This cannabinoid is non-psychoactive means it will not induce a high in you.
There have been many studies that suggest the benefits of CBD Oil in treating Epilepsy. Cannabidiol can effectively be used to reduce the frequency of seizures in epilepsy patients.

Studies On CBD Oil For Epilepsy

A study done in 2013, surveyed the parents of children suffering from treatment-resistant epilepsy. This survey studied the use of CBD as an alternative treatment for children suffering from epilepsy. Thirteen children had Dravet syndrome, four had Doose syndrome, and one each had Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and idiopathic epilepsy. The average number of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) tried before using cannabidiol-enriched cannabis was 12. Sixteen (84%) of the 19 parents reported a reduction in their child’s seizure frequency while taking cannabidiol-enriched cannabis. Of these, two (11%) reported complete seizure freedom, eight (42%) reported a greater than 80% reduction in seizure frequency, and six (32%) reported a 25-60% seizure reduction. Other beneficial effects included increased alertness, better mood, and improved sleep.

According to Dr. Devinsky, CBD is said to bind to the brain receptor which is found in the Endocannabinoid system in the brain. When CBD interacts with these receptors, it balances the calcium activity in the nerve cells.
Researches reported that CBD using high-quality pure CBD for seizures reduced seizures by 37% in the average patients and for 2% of patients seizures completely stopped.

A study conducted in 1981, stated that the anticonvulsant nature of CBD has therapeutic potential in at least three of the four major types of epilepsy namely grand mal, cortical focal, and complex partial seizures.

CBD is also beneficial in treating the symptoms related to epilepsy such as mood swings, anxiety, and depression as well.
